In the winter of 1986 I was a young surfer competing in a large Pro-Am surf contest in Huntington Beach and was approached by Bruce Weber who was there shooting for his " Bruce Weber Summer Diary - Per Lui 1986 " publication. I had no idea who he was or knew much of anything about fashion. We shot around the contest area that day and the next day at The Shangri-La Hotel in Santa Monica with cast of classic characters . I went on my way off to college very thankful for the opportunity - but turning down Bruce's offer to get me involved more in the business ( I really had no idea who he was but thought he was very kind ... but regardless was determined to attend newly accepted UCSB in the coming weeks ) A few months into my college experience I had a few people coming up to me and asking if I was the guy they had seen in their newly purchased Summer Diary by Bruce Weber ... it was then who I learned who Bruce was. I took a quarter break from school after a year into it and went to Paris and Germany for the summer and fall to try out the model life .. it went fairly well - did a few large runway shows like Montana in 87 and a few others and some catalog in Munich and Hamburg and surrounding areas and came back to finish out and graduate from school. After graduation I hit the business hard and within a short time was working very consistently for International Male in San Diego Ca. I stayed in great shape from surfing and running and that played into fitting their clothes and swimwear well enough to become one of their busier models during the start of the 90's for quite a run. I went on to work for Speedo USA for a long run as well. The catalog scene was very good to me ... I worked for Eddie Bauer more than any other client - but enjoyed working for other outdoor clients such as Pendleton and many more including the Department Stores - Nordstrom , Macy's, JC Penney, Target , Kohl's ... I had some wonderful Advertisement jobs throughout - but remained very busy within catalog and certainly enjoyed it. I am fortunate to still be involved in this exciting business 40 years later and feel so grateful - truly all stemming from that fateful day on the beach when a kind curious and sincere voice said " Hi -My name is Bruce ... would you mind if I took your picture?... you have a beautiful look about you ". Thanks Bruce!
